Justice Coalition USA Statement on the July 1st, 2024 US Supreme Court Decision on Presidential Immunity
Trump V. United States
Certiorari To The United States Court Of Appeals For
The District Of Columbia Circuit
No. 23–939. Argued April 25, 2024—Decided July 1, 2024
We Dissent
- This decision protects him from criminal and civil consequences for virtually all actions he has taken or will take.
- This decision used ambiguous definitions for “official” and “private” acts, allowing Mr. Trump to get away with his assaults against women and democracy.
- This decision lifted the stakes for the 2024 elections. If re-elected, Mr. Trump will dismiss charges or pardon himself and his co-insurrectionists.
- This decision makes the Supreme Court makeup more precarious. With two Justices waving their flags of allegiance to Mr. Trump, the next president and Senate will nominate Justices to decide critical policy issues for many years.
- Mr. Trump led the effort to de-legitimate the 2020 election results and his Big Lies about them have never been erased from the public mind.
- We join Justice Sonia Sotomayer’s Powerful Dissent:
Justice Sonia Sotomayer’s Dissent
- The Supreme Court has now allowed a president to become a “king above the law”.
- The person in charge of enforcing the laws of the land can now just break them.
- This decision is utterly indefensible and effectively creates a law-free zone around the president, upsetting the status quo that has existed since the founding of this democracy.
- This extraordinary rule has no basis in any prior law, and makes a mockery of the principle that no one is above the law.
